Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis Health

This experience offers biomedical engineering majors an opportunity to engage in an authentic clinical-needs-finding experience. Students receive in-depth instruction in the industry-relevant tools and methods throughout the product design and development process.

Experience at a glance 

  • Offered fall quarter
  • Max. enrollment of 12 biomedical engineering students
  • Prerequisites: 
    • applicants must be in good academic standing
    • completed lower-division required coursework before program start date:
      • MAT 21A-D
      • MAT 22/27AB
      • CHE 2A-C
      • BIS 2A
      • PHY 9A-C
      • ENG 6
      • ENG 17 
  • Experience combines coursework with research experience at Aggie Square 
  • Applications accepted April 6-24
  • No program fees

The application process consists of three competitive stages:

  • Application: Eligible students must complete the Quarter at Aggie Square application.
  • Group interview: Selected applicants invited to an in-person group interview with program faculty at UC Davis Health in mid-May.
  • Secondary interview (if needed): Some students may be asked to complete a secondary interview.

Final selection notifications sent in early June.

Who is this experience for? 

  • Second-year biomedical engineering students who want to enhance their knowledge of engineering design and gain exposure to the clinical environment in their third year
  • Students who seek enhanced exposure to critical topics, including clinical workflow, FDA and device regulation, standards and entrepreneurial mindset in the clinical setting 
  • Students planning to work in industry or pursue a higher degree in academia
  • Experience serves as a foundation for the senior design course

  • Coursework and lectures at Aggie Square
  • In-depth instruction in industry-relevant tools and methods used in product design and development 
  • Participate in clinical observations and procedures at UC Davis Health
  • Network with health care and industry professionals 
  • Work closely with faculty and peers in a small, supportive cohort setting
